Our Journey Through the Decades
Today, Hasty Plywood stands as a trusted name, proudly shaping the future of plywood manufacturing while honoring the legacy of our past.
1930's
Hasty Plywood was founded in 1930 as a veneer supplier to cut from the hardwood trees in the Maxton, North Carolina area.
The year 1930 marked the humble beginnings of Hasty Plywood Company, founded with a vision to provide reliable, high-quality plywood to meet the growing demands of the construction and manufacturing industries. It was a significant time of economic challenges, the company embraced innovation and resilience to carve out its place in the industry.
In its early years, Hasty Plywood focused on producing sturdy and versatile plywood, utilizing cutting-edge techniques for the time. This dedication to quality and craftsmanship allowed the company to build a reputation as a dependable supplier, even as the country faced the effects of the Great Depression.
From these modest origins, Hasty Plywood laid the foundation for what would become nearly a century of growth, innovation, and leadership in the plywood manufacturing sector. Today, we honor the legacy of our founders by continuing to deliver premium products that stand the test of time.
1990s
Hasty Plywood became an integral partner in the production of architect Frank Gehry’s revolutionary bentwood furniture line. As Gehry sought to bring his innovative designs to life, Hasty Plywood’s expertise in manufacturing high-quality, flexible plywood played a pivotal role. The process began at our Maxton, NC facility, where raw maple wood was transformed into layered, heat-treated strips. These strips were engineered to achieve the precise flexibility and durability needed for Gehry’s intricate creations.
Working closely with the Marshall Group, a New Bern-based furniture assembler, Hasty Plywood ensured that each component met the exacting standards required for Gehry’s avant-garde designs. The result was furniture that not only achieved critical acclaim but also became permanent exhibits in prestigious institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This collaboration highlights Hasty Plywood’s ability to adapt traditional manufacturing techniques to meet the demands of modern, visionary projects. By providing superior materials and technical support, we helped turn Gehry’s designs into tangible works of art, cementing our role as a trusted innovator in the plywood industry.
2000's
Hasty Plywood advanced its expertise in innovative furniture production with significant contributions to modern chair design. The year saw the creation of the Sylvan Chair, the fourth in a series of single-piece plywood chairs that exemplify seamless craftsmanship and structural efficiency. To ensure precision, a 1/4 scale working model was developed to mold the chair, reflecting our commitment to meticulous design processes.
In addition to the Sylvan Chair, the Kumo Chair was also designed, showcasing our continued dedication to supporting forward-thinking furniture solutions. These designs required close collaboration, leading to multiple visits to Hasty Plywood's facilities to establish and refine the necessary tooling and production methods.
These projects underline Hasty Plywood's ability to translate visionary designs into reality, leveraging our technical expertise and manufacturing capabilities to support furniture innovations.
